Terms of Reference (TOR) for Consultant: Board and Leadership Training

Background of the organisation

Childline Zimbabwe is a registered Private Voluntary Organisation (PVO 7/2001). Childline provides a free 24-hour freephone and online reporting and support platforms for children and young people in Zimbabwe and operates Drop-in Centres across the country. The organisation provides children, young people, families and those involved with children, preventative, educational, therapeutic and rehabilitation services in addition to undertaking research and advocacy on child and youth safeguarding. Childline’s vision is: ‘A Zimbabwe that is passionate about the protection of children,”’. This is achieved through the organisation’s mission: ‘To champion and promote the rights of children in Zimbabwe through the provision of safe, confidential reporting and support mechanisms. Childline programmes revolve around four thematic areas namely reporting and support platforms, specialized therapeutic services, knowledge management and advocacy.

Context and scope of the assignments

Board Training

Recently, changes in funding for local organizations have necessitated that Boards develop skills in resources mobilization organisational sustainability and increased oversight. A Board training needs survey conducted in April 2024 revealed that the Childline Board members wished to be trained in best practices for strategic governance and fundraising. This proposed project aims to enhance the Childline Board’s capacity in governance, resource mobilization, and strategic oversight. This training will enhance the Board’s effectiveness by equipping members with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfil their roles responsibly and ethically. The training will cover topics such as legal and fiduciary responsibilities, financial oversight, and resource mobilization for nonprofit organizations. The anticipated outcome of this training is improved governance and decision-making, ultimately enabling Childline to better deliver its mission. By integrating resource mobilization into the training, Childline aims for the Board to gain confidence in fundraising and developing a social enterprise, thereby ensuring the organization’s sustainability.

Leadership Coaching and Mentoring

The Childline 2024-2028 Strategic plan emphasizes the need to strengthen staff capacities and improve staff retention to make Childline an employer of choice. The strategy identifies supporting key staff in the developing new, relevant skills as an important retention mechanism .In the proposed project ,Childline intends to enrol 6 members of the Leadership Team in a leadership coaching program .The goal is to increase employee morale and retention ,improve productivity ,promote better decision making and build stronger teams .The retention program will train the Childline leadership Team in the management styles that fosters a work environment and promote team productivity.

Objectives: The primary objectives of this consultancy are as follows:

  • Childline Board and leadership team training in legal and fiduciary responsibilities, strategic leadership, resource mobilisation and social enterprises.
  • Leadership coaching and mentorship programme for Childline leaders.

Deliverables:

  • A 2-day Board training for board members in February 2025.
  • A 4-day leadership training for the management team in February 2025.
  • 5 Leadership coaching and mentorship sessions in February and March 2025.

Consultants’ recruitment and selection

The consultant should possess the following qualifications and experience:

  1. A master’s degree in strategic planning, Organisational Development, or a closely related field.
  2. Proven experience in resources mobilization & strategic partnerships development training.
  3. Demonstratable experience in high-quality training manuals on governance and leadership specifically for board members.
  4. A good understanding of the non-profit sector and funding landscape.
  5. At least 5 years’ experience in the leading the training and establishment of governance boards, capacity building of board member on their governance role.
  6. Excellent written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Costs and Expenses:

Childline will cover the following costs:

  • Consultancy fees

NB: The consultant will be paid the full amount after the training.

Application Process:

  • An expression of interest.
  • A detailed technical proposal clearly demonstrates a thorough understanding of these ToRs and includes the following:
  • Demonstrated previous experience in coordinating and administering assignments of a similar nature.
  • At least three contactable references of recent work conducted.
