The Halo Trust

HALO is the leading global NGO addressing the impact and drivers of conflict in 28 countries and territories, with over 12,000 staff. Most of our staff are local employees and include a growing number of women. Our primary duty is to serve people affected by conflict, clearing landmines and the explosive remnants of war that threaten lives and livelihoods long after fighting has finished.

Role Summary

The driver is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of passengers and workloads transported within HALO vehicles. Vehicles must be driven safely at all times, in a manner that is suitable for the road and weather conditions and that is respectful to vehicle passengers and of other road users. The driver should obey the national driving laws and should adhere to any additional rules and regulations as required by the HALO Trust in order to maintain the good working state of the programme's vehicle fleet.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To drive a Land Rover, Land Cruiser or DAF truck, driving safely at all times as instructed, and within the road traffic laws
  • To carry out daily vehicle checks as listed in the HALO Trust Vehicle and Driving SOPs
  • To drive in convoy on deployment & recovery days
  • To load the vehicle as instructed and within the bounds of the HALO Trust Vehicle and Driving SOPs
  • To make journeys requested by the appropriate senior member of staff, avoiding unnecessary trips that waste fuel and cause wear to vehicles
  • Complete all required paperwork and at the appropriate time. For example Journey Log at the beginning and end of each individual journey
  • To perform all reasonable HALO work-related tasks that are requested of them by more senior members of staff that do not interfere with their other duties: for example, the painting of marking sticks
  • To keep the administration area/CP maintained and tidy at all times
  • To maintain the security and condition of all tools in the vehicle as listed in the SOPs, including fire extinguishers
  • To ensure that at the end of the cycle the vehicle is clean, fuelled, all documentation has been completed, any issues reported in the logbook and discussed with a mechanic and the Fleet Manager before departing the compound

Qualifications, Experience and Key attributes

  • Valid Zimbabwe driver’s license (class 2 or 4)
  • Valid defensive driver’s certificate
  • At least one year driving experience in a similar or related environment
  • Understanding of vehicle and small engine maintenance

At no stage of the recruitment process does HALO charge a fee.
